Wilkesboro proper is the town buyers default to when they have not yet visited. It has the historic downtown, the courthouse, Wilkes Community College, MerleFest, and most of the desirable elementary feeders. North Wilkesboro carries roughly a 20 percent price discount per square foot on comparable homes, and the gap is mostly perception. There are 14 schools serving K-12, with three high schools (Wilkes Central, East Wilkes, North Wilkes), three middle schools, and eight elementary schools. For most Wilkesboro and North Wilkesboro addresses, the base assignment pattern is one of three elementary schools (C.C. Wright, Mountain View, or Mulberry depending on zone), Central Wilkes Middle or West Wilkes Middle, and Wilkes Central High School. East Wilkes serves the eastern county, North Wilkes serves the western county. US-421 is the artery. It is a four-lane divided highway most of the way to Winston-Salem with limited interchange traffic, which makes the 55-mile drive feel like 35. Many Triad professionals work 3 days a week in Winston-Salem and 2 days remote from Wilkes. The hybrid math works.

For those without a car, the NCDOT High Country Gateway intercity bus runs daily service between Boone, Wilkesboro, Yadkinville, and Winston-Salem with a Wilkesboro-to-Winston-Salem fare of $15. That is rare for a rural NC county and matters for retirees or anyone who wants a single-car household.

Three cultural and recreational anchors drive a lot of the relocation interest into Wilkes: W. Kerr Scott Reservoir, MerleFest, and the renovated North Wilkesboro Speedway.

W. Kerr Scott Lake is a 1,470-acre US Army Corps of Engineers reservoir on the Yadkin River, with 55 miles of shoreline, a marina, a state park, and roughly 35 to 50 miles of mountain bike single-track maintained by the Brushy Mountain Cyclists Club. MerleFest is the four-day Americana music festival held the last weekend of April on the 150-acre Wilkes Community College campus at 1328 South Collegiate Drive. Well and septic. A meaningful share of Wilkes County homes outside Wilkesboro and North Wilkesboro town limits are on private well and septic.
